Preparing for Surgery
Helping You Feel Confident, Informed, and Ready for a Successful Recovery
Preparing for surgery is an important part of achieving the best possible outcome. Our goal is to ensure you feel informed, prepared, and supported every step of the way. From your initial consultation through recovery, our team is committed to providing the education and resources you need for a smooth surgical experience.
Before Your Procedure
During your preoperative visit, Dr. Barton will review your diagnosis, discuss your surgical plan, explain what to expect, and answer any questions you may have. Together, we’ll review your medical history, medications, imaging, and recovery goals to ensure your treatment plan is tailored to your individual needs.
Depending on your procedure, you may also be asked to:
- Complete a medical evaluation with your primary care provider or specialist.
- Obtain any necessary laboratory tests, imaging, or cardiac clearance.
- Adjust or temporarily stop certain medications as directed by your healthcare team.
- Begin preoperative exercises or physical therapy to optimize strength and mobility.
- Stop smoking or vaping and optimize nutrition, as these can significantly improve healing.
- Arrange transportation home and assistance during the first few days after surgery.
Preparing Your Home
Creating a safe and comfortable recovery environment before surgery can make returning home easier. We recommend:
- Removing tripping hazards such as loose rugs or electrical cords.
- Placing frequently used items within easy reach.
- Preparing meals ahead of time.
- Setting up a comfortable sleeping and resting area.
- Using assistive devices, such as a walker or crutches, if recommended.
The Day of Surgery
On the day of your procedure, please:
- Follow all fasting instructions provided by your surgical team.
- Take only the medications approved by your physician.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Leave valuables at home.
- Bring your identification, insurance information, and any requested paperwork.
- Arrive at the surgical facility at your scheduled check-in time.
Our team will review your procedure, answer any last-minute questions, and ensure you are comfortable before surgery begins.
Your Recovery
Recovery begins immediately after surgery. Every rehabilitation plan is individualized based on your procedure, overall health, and personal goals. You can expect:
- Early, safe mobilization whenever appropriate.
- A personalized pain management plan.
- Detailed instructions for wound care and activity restrictions.
- Physical therapy designed to restore strength, motion, and function.
- Scheduled follow-up visits to monitor your progress and guide your recovery.
Our team will remain available throughout your recovery to answer questions, address concerns, and help you achieve the best possible outcome.
